Let’s begin this discussion by acknowledging that Healthy Talk says maintaining fitness is not easy and it’s often not much fun either. However, you know how important it is. Luckily, drastic steps are unnecessary. A bit of time and dedication will make all the difference. You can even make it fun.
If you are someone who is highly motivated by shopping, set a budget and go buy some cute workout clothing. Regardless of the size or use of the item, just having something cute you want to show off will get you to the gym.
Achieve optimal fitness by using your body’s processes to your advantage. Stick to smaller weights at first and gradually build your way up to machines. This way, you can work fatigue-prone smaller muscles first. Your larger muscles need less support from smaller muscles, so this is an optimal way to work your physiology to your advantage.
Yoga used to be an obscure activity, done only by those into new age experiences. But yoga has become so mainstream that it’s almost impossible now to find someone who hasn’t tried it. There are many types of yoga exercises, which focus on stretching and elongating muscles. There is yoga that focuses on relaxing, but also fitness yoga that gets your heart pumping.
If jogging or hitting the gym is not your thing and you love gardening, how about getting the shovel and wheelbarrow out and getting in a little exercise in your yard? In fact, the National Institute of Health, lists gardening among the moderate exercises that are recommeneded for combating obesity. Just weeding for 30 minutes can burn over 150 calories and you’ll work muscles in your back, legs and arms, without the jarring that jogging and aerobic exercises puts your body through. So the next time you dread putting on your jogging shoes, pick up a hoe and take care of that flower bed you’ve been meaning to get to, for the last month. It’s fun and great for your body.
Pull those elbows down when you are doing chin-ups! Proper exercise technique can be tremendously enhanced with visualization. When you are completing chin-ups it helps to think in terms of pulling your elbows down rather than pulling your body up! You’ll be able to complete more pull ups using better form.
Before plunging right in the water and starting to swim, spend some time ducking your body, head included, in and out of the water. Breathe in while you’re on the surface and breathe out while you are under. This gives you time to acclimatize to the water and your swimming will enjoy the benefits.
If you are unable to exercise due to time constraints or whatever the reason, try to squeeze in at least 20 minutes of either cardio or strength training, two times a week. Research has shown that those who worked out minimally, used less sick days than those who did not exercise at all.
To get the optimal muscle growth following a weight workout, make sure to eat a protein shake immediately following your session. It’s been found that people who eat immediately following their workouts (within five minutes) increase their muscles, but those that wait and eat the shake hours afterwords tend to not have as much muscle growth.
If exercising just isn’t for you – whether you’re too busy or it aggravates you – still try to find the time to do twenty minutes of either aerobic exercise or weight lifting two times every week. Even this little bit of exercise, has been shown to increase your health.
If you feel a little beat up after exercise, you may be tempted to pop an ibuprofen or acetaminophen pill. Don’t do it. Studies have shown that these pills are about as effective as a placebo to relieve the pain associated with exercise. Moreover, it’s been shown that the pills can actually slow down the growth of muscles if taken post-exercise.
Fitness routines should be planned realistically and tailored to the individual user. Getting fit and healthy is a noble goal. It is not going to replace the needs of family, work and friends, though. Exercise regimens need to fit into the user’s lifestyle. Expecting the exerciser to change his lifestyle to fit an ambitious regimen is unrealistic and ultimately futile.
Drink a lot of water throughout your day. While you exercise, your body loses water due to the friction of muscle fibers against one another. The sweat glands in your body eliminate the heat, which results in minor dehydration.
A good way to stay motivated is to create a fitness board. You can cut out pictures from magazines and put them on a bulletin board to remind you of your goals; whether it be a more fit body, to run a 5k race or to take your dogs out for walks more often. Make sure to hang the board in a place where you will look at it often.
Weight lifters would do well to complement their workouts with a post workout drink. Studies have shown that significant gains can be achieved if a protein rich drink is ingested right after a workout. Your favorite protein shake would be just fine, or even a pint of chocolate milk has all the nutrients you need.
When designing a fitness program, it is a good idea to devote at least 2 days per week to strength training. Remember that muscles increase metabolism and burn fat, so the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you can consume without getting fat. If you want to get in terrific shape, aerobic exercise is not enough, you must build muscle.
No one said fitness was always easy or fun, but if you approach it the right way, it can feel more of both. You do not need to hurry to reach the finish line, and you do not need to do it all alone. So do everything in your power to get the body that you truly want.
